Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry

The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry was a medical and dental school in England, established in 2000 through a partnership between the University of Exeter, the University of Plymouth, and the NHS in Devon and Cornwall. In January 2013, the institution began disaggregation, leading to the formation of the University of Exeter Medical School and the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. The college had campuses at the University of Plymouth, the University of Exeter, the John Bull Building (Derriford Hospital and Plymouth Science Park), the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, and the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Teaching of medical students also took place at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple, South Devon Healthcare Trust in Torbay, and various General Practices across the region, along with community-oriented healthcare settings. The dental school component, known as the Peninsula Dental School, was established in 2006 and was the first new dental school in the UK in three decades. It trained 64 dentists annually, offering a joint Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree through the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth. The program was a four-year course designed for science graduates or healthcare professionals. For the first two years, students were primarily based at the University of Plymouth, focusing on core clinical and communication skills. The Peninsula Dental School in Truro, located at the Knowledge Spa within the Royal Cornwall Hospital (TR1 3HD), offers a range of dental services. These include routine check-ups, professional cleaning (scale and polish), crowns and bridges, fillings, root canal treatments (endodontics), tooth extractions, wisdom teeth removal, and treatment for gum disease. The facility also provides advice on teeth and gum care to promote oral health. Operating hours are Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with closures on weekends.
